If you haven't seen the trailer for INK yet, go to DOUBLEEDGEFILMS.COM now and watch it. Seriously.
I had the pleasure of going to the press screening of this film on Thursday night. I was super excited to see INK because I was a huge fan of the trailer. For a really independent film shot in Denver, Colorado, the trailer is pretty damn impressive. But INK's trailer made me nervous. I wanted this movie to be awesome. I wanted it to be as captivating, stimulating, and magical as the trailer made it out to be. And I really really hoped that Jamin and Kiowa Winans could pull it off. Well...let me tell you...they did.
INK is the type of movie that is not only inspiring as a filmmaker, but just as a fan of movies. It's emotional, suspensful, creepy, beautiful, and riveting.
I hate movie reviews that tell you the plot, so I won't do that at all because one of the biggest strengths of the film is discovering the story. So many films, especially genre flicks, lay out everything within ten minutes. Throughout INK, you are constantly trying to follow along...in a good way. You appreciate the discovery like a great video game or good book.
The characters in the film are so much fun. They're flawed, three dimensional, and most importantly, bad ass. The good guys are freaking tough which is helpful because the bad guys are freaking scary. Two major ass kickers are women, which is rare to see.
The visual effects in the film are not just impressive, but creative. They make you say "Whoa!" but not because they're multimillion dollar effects, you've just never seen anything like them before (just look at that picture up there).
So many indy films are coming-of-age bore fests about character development and redemption. INK is definitely a story of redemption, but with a lot of ass kicking fight scenes, great visuals, and one hell of a fantastical story. I can't recommend it enough.
MY GRADE: A for AMAZING!
