Let me start by saying I think TRANSFORMERS is one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget seeing that movie on opening day with Annie Baker and Corey Costello being genuinely excited for what I was about to see. What I did see was a 2+ hour commercial containing some of the worst slapstick humor ever put on screen. Half way through the movie, I could have sworn the Transformers were going to do the “Transformers Rap.” I soon realized this wasn’t INDEPENDENCE DAY or TERMINATOR 2 for a new generation of kids, this was an abomination of cinema.
So going into TRANSFORMERS 2: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, I really wasn’t expecting much. Or should I say I was expecting exactly what I got: A stupid 2.5+ hour movie containing a hell of a lot of robots making noise and Shia LeBouf and Megan Fox running around for…well…no one really knows.
The story is nearly incomprehensible and unlike most films where this is a bad thing; in TRANSFORMERS 2 you really don’t care. TRANSFORMERS 2 was made for audiences around the world to watch robots fight each other on giant set pieces. It was made to witness Megan Fox run around with that scared look on her face (you can see it in the photo above). It was made to see Shia LeBouf yell “No no no no no no” really fast (he's saying it in the photo above). From frame one Michael Bay has one message to his audience and one message only: "Watch...don't think."
The whole plot thing never really mattered to anyone making this film and it sure as hell shouldn’t matter to anyone watching. Technically, it’s the same thing with STAR TREK. But the difference is STAR TREK had amazing characters, great dialogue, classic mythology, and a proven format. You didn’t care about that flawed time travel story because the rest of the movie was so freaking awesome.
So my point is this: If you liked the first one and think this movie is awful (like most film blogs right now) you are lying to yourself. This movie is just as terrible if not a little bit less terrible than the first. For some reason unbeknownst to me, I have seen TRANSFORMERS nearly 10 times (thank HBO for that, I guess) and I hate that movie. But something about it is WATCHable. That’s all I can really say for this one too.
MY GRADE: C for Ehh...Could have been worse...
