So I'm gonna be honest here. I wasn't really too excited to see DRAG ME TO HELL. I thought the trailer was fun, but didn't really grasp the tone they were trying to portray. The TV spots seemed to give away a bunch of scares and I figured there wouldn't be any left in the film. I also wasn't really into the whole "curse" idea.
Whatever. I couldn't have been more incorrect. This movie is freaking awesome and is (dare I say) one of the best horror movies in the past few years.
THE EVIL DEAD Trilogy is a big part of my life. I don't watch the movies every weekend, but when it comes down to it, they represent my favorite style of horror. Sure, I love THE EXORCIST and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE just as much as the next horror fan, but EVIL DEAD II is my perfect cup of tea.
Horror movies are a lot like punk rock music. I LOVE punk rock. But my favorite punk band is Green Day. Not SHAM 69 or some "real" punk band. And like Green Day proclaimed when they won the Grammy a few years ago, they proved that they can make music dangerous AND fun. And that's EXACTLY what Sam Raimi does.
Like THE EVIL DEAD Trilogy, everytime you scream in horror during DRAG ME TO HELL, you laugh your ass off because you're having such a fun time watching it. The plot, dialogue, and characters aren't gonna win an Oscar, but that's not what we're there to see. We're want Sam Raimi to torture his protagonist (this time played by Alison Lohman) by throwing every type of disgusting goo Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger could dream up in their disgusting KNB lab.
The throw backs to EVIL DEAD aren't forced but organic (work sheds or "get some" anyone?) and the pacing is pitch perfect. I only missed seeing some of the crazy stylized camera EVIL DEAD was known for. But clearly, Sam Raimi wasn't trying to remake EVIL DEAD...DRAG ME TO HELL is it's own special little movie that is sure to be another classic.
MY GRADE: A for AWESOME!
